Domestic Abuse in LGBTQ+ Relationships: Breaking the Silence

Domestic abuse can affect anyone – regardless of gender, sexuality, or relationship type. But for people in LGBTQ+ relationships, the journey to getting help is often even more complex.

We recognise the underreporting, misunderstanding and overlooking of abuse within same-sex or LGBTQ+ relationships. During Pride Month and beyond, we are committed to raising awareness and challenging stigma. Ensuring that every person knows their rights – and where they can turn for help.

Understanding Domestic Abuse in LGBTQ+ Relationships

Abuse isn’t always physical. It can include:

  • Emotional abuse – criticism, gaslighting, control or threats to “out” someone
  • Sexual abuse – coercion or unwanted sexual contact
  • Financial abuse – restricting access to money or employment
  • Coercive control – isolating someone from friends and support
  • Outing threats – using someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity as a weapon

A partner can carry out abuse, but it can also come from family members or community figures. This is true in the form of honour-based abuse.

Honour-Based Abuse in the LGBTQ+ Community

For some LGBTQ+ individuals, simply being open about their identity can lead to abuse framed as protecting “family honour.” Honour-based abuse (HBA) can include:

  • Forced marriage
  • Physical or emotional abuse by family
  • Threats of disownment or exile
  • Being monitored, followed or harassed
  • Restrictions on freedom, education, or expression

HBA is rooted in cultural or religious expectations and is often carried out by multiple family members acting together. It is never acceptable, and it is a form of domestic abuse recognised by UK law.

Real-life example (anonymised):

A young gay man contacted us after fleeing his family home. He was facing threats of violence and forced marriage due to his sexuality. We helped him secure a non-molestation order and connected him with safe housing and LGBTQ+ friendly counselling services.

No one should be harmed for who they are. If you or someone you know is facing abuse under the guise of “honour,” please reach out. We can help you stay safe, seek legal protection, and rebuild with support.

The Reality: What the Statistics Tell Us

Research from Galop shows:

  • 1 in 4 LGBTQ+ people will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.
  • 80% of trans people report emotional abuse, and over 35% report physical abuse.
  • LGBTQ+ survivors are often unsure where to go or fear that services won’t be inclusive.
